Mixing up the mustard

So far I've worn this mustard blazer with navy   and with the same top and teal pants. This time I'm pairing the two pieces with brown. Even though its the exact same top and blazer, they look different than they did with the teal. I love it when I wardrobe is this versatile.

This outfit was so much fun. I'll admit I got a few strange stares at the polka dot tights. How dare a forty-something year old woman dress like that? LOL. But I loved it and felt good in it all day. This outfit has been in my head since last winter and combines three of my favorite pieces- mustard cardigan, polka dot popover and this skirt. I'm glad I finally wore it.  If this popover ever returns to JCrew factory, snatch it up. Here are 9 ways I've worn it. It just won't stop.

This outfit is very similar to this one. It's the same two base pieces- navy blazer and camel pants. However, the shoes, blouse and accessories are different. I used an oxblood top and mustard bag to bring in more fall colors. I went with leopard flats. Leopard really goes with anything but I love it with fall colors best. Speaking of the flats- I have a love/hate relationship with flats. If they are dressy enough for work, then they usually don't look right with casual clothes. On the other hand, if like these, they work with casual, then they don't work with business attire. These ballet flats are a little more interesting than some, but after seeing these photos, I don't think they work with this outfit.

Anyone have any suggestions on a flat shoe that is more versatile?

I'm using Bridgette Raes for inspiration again. I'm not sure this worked out as well as I'd hoped, but I was at least dressed. I might try this again with a different green blouse, but I do like the combination of teal and mustard. I swapped the fringe cardigan from the inspiration post for a boyfriend blazer. Using other posts for inspiration is not about copying piece for piece but more about using your own closet to find suitable substitutes. The inspiration post outfit was also about wearing plaid and plaid shoes were linked in the post, but I subbed my new pointed toe bow flats. I fell in love with these at TJMaxx recently.

Where do you find inspiration and how do you use it?

This cardigan has been an under utilized item in my closet, but I have taken a renewed interest in cardigans this season, so I'm determined to wear this one. I already love grey and mustard together, so why not throw in navy.

Once again inspiration was taken from Bridgette Raes and this mix and match style post. (third set down) This was a very comfy outfit for the office but I still felt polished. Feeling good in your clothes is as important as how you look. I don't mean feeling "yoga pants comfortable" all the time, but you should have confidence in what you wear.

I recently discovered Bridgette Raes. How have I missed this wealth of information all this time? She has a ton of ideas for us professional working women. She may be a bad influence on my wallet though. I'll explain in a bit. I'm finding unending inspiration at her site. One visit leads me to one suggested post after another, lots of pinning, and lots of searching for new shoes, accessories and items. Some of her suggestions are a bit out of my budget but there is always second hand thrift sites and ebay. You see where this is going?

Not to let all that searching and shopping be in vain, I put together this outfit based on inspiration found from her site. Using the outfits in this post, I came up with my own version. I fell in love with that purse, or rather the color.  I had been contemplating the one above after seeing it in Belk on clearance but ran straight back to the store to get it once I saw how great it looked with all these outfits. I have always stuck to boring purses- black, brown, beige- because I don't swap them out very often. I am adapting though and learning to change my purse a little more often.  Now, for the rest of the outfit. I have a similar navy trumpet shape skirt in my closet but it's, ahem, a little to snug at the moment. I wasn't feeling my navy pencil skirt either, so I went with navy trousers. I don't have mustard pumps or wedges either, but I really liked the pop of that color in the inspiration outfits and remembered I have this necklace. So with just a few switches, I have my own version of one of the inspiration outfits. I may or may not have fallen in love with a necklace in that post too and searched out ebay for it. You'll know in a few posts to come.
