Four go to outfit formulas to get you through the rest of winter

Four "go to" outfit formulas to get your through the rest of winter- that's a long title. But that's exactly what this is. Winter is wearing on many of you and inspiration may be lacking. You may be tempted to reach for the same sweater and jeans, but these formulas will get you through the last of winter with a little variety.  Many of you have a few weeks of winter left and it's uncertain for the rest of us. The next two days will be in the 80s for us and 70s most of next week here. That has everyone itching to transition to spring. Even if you want to transition to spring, you can still use these formulas by using spring colors.

Winter jewel tones

I like wearing jewel tones in the winter, but have not incorporated them much this season. After seeing some inspiration from Stylin in St. Louise  and hi sugarplum, I decided to it was time to bring them back into my winter attire.

Here's to a short week! I'm so excited I can hardly contain myself. Here's to grey and olive too. I love how these two colors work together.

Cozy fall sale picks- Saturday Shopping

Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links. I receive commission for clicks and purchases made through them.

We took a little vacation in the mountains this week. I had visions of snuggling by a fire and drinking coffee while wrapped in a blanket all week. It didn't happen as the temps remained quite warm for the week.  It finally started to feel like fall the very last day, so I still have cozy things on my mind.  Express is having 40% off sale and Loft has sweaters and tops 40% off this weekend. Macy's is also taking 25% off purchases this weekend with code FRESH, so here are my picks from these sales.

Ya'll, I'll admit I've had a difficult time getting into the Nordstrom Anniversary sale. Everyone says it's one of the best ones ever, but I've been seeing everyone's picks and posts and I've not been overly impressed.  It's just that it's so hot here, and we may be wearing shorts into October, it's hard for me to even fathom that I need anything for fall.

Are you tired of seeing the same ol' thing over and over? I am. Just sayin. I know there are some popular items we all like, but I get tired of seeing them. But I will admit that the more I see the posts and the more I search the website, the more things grow on me. So I've been searching for some things that can be worn early fall in the South and layered later in the winter. I've also tried to pick some things that haven't been posted over and over, and I kept it under $100. I don't know about your, but some things just aren't in my budget, even on sale.

I will also be sharing a business professional set of picks later, so make sure you are following me so you won't miss it. There truly are lots of great items out there and it's hard to stick them all in one post.

It's a great time to stock up on some classics and basics or dip your toes into a trend. The skinny neck scarf is coming onto the scene, so now might be a good time to give this trend a try. They have one in a floral print too. If you need boots, buy them now. I bought my cognac riding boots last year, so I don't need any this year. I've got the boots covered with a cognac pair, black pair, and a couple of heeled pairs for work. That's another reason I can't get into the sale- I've got most of my basics covered.

We are in the early access phase so you need a Nordstrom debit or credit card to shop. Sign up here.

 Happy Shopping!

By this point in the season, most of us start itching for spring, color and some flowers. It's not here yet, so I pulled it into this outfit. The key to fall/winter florals is a dark background so they still look seasonally appropriate. I actually copied this whole outfit from Anne at In Residence.  I just don't have the cool blue suede booties she has, so I wore my black ones. I also wore the same necklace and earrings as the day before. These are my "go to" accessories when I don't have time to think about it.

I love a chunky cable knit sweater for cold days. They just scream cozy. And I still reach for this sweater that I picked up from Old Navy last year. Here is a similar version available this year. I added this knit infinity scarf and thought it still needed a  little more interest, so I added the necklace. Do you ever layer accessories this way?

Layering is tricky

Layering a button up shirt under a sweater is something that I have yet to master. I love the look on others but always feel like it adds way to much bulk around the middle to my short torso. It really has everything to do with what you are trying to layer. In my mind, these pieces would work, but in reality they didn't. Even though I like the color scheme of this outfit, I doubt I will ever repeat it. The shirt underneath is too bulky and the sweater is too thin. The shirt would work with a chunkier looser sweater and a thinner smoother shirt would work with this sweater. So, it really does come down to which pieces you are trying to layer.

I've also read about putting a tank between the two shirts for a smoother fit, but I've not tried it. I think it would be too uncomfortable. Have you tried it? Do you have any layering tips to share? I'd love to hear them.

By the way, did you catch a sneak peek of these shoes on Instagram last week?
